Assa-Zag Province is the largest province in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, covering an area of 27,000 square kilometers, or 20% of the region’s total area. According to the 2014 census, its population is 44,124, with a population density of approximately 1.11 inhabitants per square kilometer.Agricultural activity, particularly livestock breeding, is the main activity of the inhabitants of Assa-Zag Province and represents the main source of economic income. As part of the Green Morocco Plan, several projects have been implemented to develop camel breeding, enhance the value of their milk and meat, as well as promote beekeeping, date production, and cactus products, in addition to initiatives to develop flood-prone areas and mitigate the effects of drought.
The handicraft sector is also one of the most important socio-economic sectors in this province. It represents a privileged area for many residents, promoting employment and self-employment. This sector includes many artistic and production branches, such as jewelry, carpentry, stone carving, traditional sewing, embroidery, tent and carpet weaving, as well as leather goods.
In terms of the tourism sector, the province has significant tourism assets which, if exploited, could make it a tourist destination of choice, thanks to the diversity of local tourism products which include adventure and exploration tourism, cultural tourism, ecological tourism and scientific tourism.
